Are you free to meet for lunch today or tomorrow?

A few minutes later I hear a ding. It’s Shelley’s response.

Sure. I’m free for lunch tomorrow. I hope everything’s OK.

She follows this with a heart emoji. For some reason, the emoji makes me scowl. It seems fake given what I now know. I text her back.

Great. Do you want to meet at Bella’s at noon?

I get the thumbs-up emoji in response. I will have some choice questions for Shelley tomorrow. I’ll have to give some thought as to how to approach it.

A wave of nausea passes through me as I place my phone back in my purse. Then a thought escapes from the corner of my mind. The corner that I keep locked with unpleasant truths. I’ve been trying to ignore it for a while, but I think I have to face the fact that I have yet another problem to deal with.

My period is almost a month late. I started taking birth control pills when I began my affair with Brad. Buried in the bottom of my makeup bag at home, there were occasions when I had forgotten to take one, but I don’t think it would be that easy to get pregnant at my age. I’m pretty sure it’s just the stress and anxiety that I’ve been dealing with that has caused me to miss my period. But the alternative would be disastrous. If I’m pregnant, Jon would know the child isn’t his. He’s sterile.

Thinking about it causes my anxiety to grow like a crack in a windshield. I need to deal with this now. I can’t handle the stress of not knowing in addition to everything else that is happening. There’s a large retail drugstore a few blocks away. I can buy a pregnancy test there. Putting on my jacket, I get ready to leave. But I stop just before opening the front door. Someone might be watching me. So instead, I lock-up and leave out the back door into the alley.

As I reach the end of the alley, I look both ways. Finding no one in sight, I quickly turn the corner onto the main street and come face to face with Brad. I almost drop my purse. It’s a Missing Person’s poster stapled to a telephone pole. Karen must have put it there.

It takes me a moment to pull myself together. Then I walk as quickly as I can to the store, looking back several times to make sure no one is following me. On the walk there, I decide that I should also buy a cheap prepaid phone while I’m there so I can make sure my calls aren’t being traced.

When I arrive, there are various people milling about. As I walk past the rows of toiletries and cosmetics, I try to avoid eye contact with anyone. Reaching the electronics section, I find what I’m looking for—a small display of pre-paid phones tucked away in the back corner. I scan the selection and grab the cheapest one I can find, placing it in my basket.
